I joined the adult Krav Maga class to try and get in shape and because my kids were enjoying the youth classes and Little Ninja program so much. As much as the instructors stress the importance of training as if it were real, I never expected to use what I learned in a life-threatening situation. However, I was attacked. I war hurt, but I was able to fight back and save my own life.
At the time of the attack, I didn’t think about what I was doing, I just reacted. I know that if I had not had the Krav training, I would have been unable to protect myself. As they tell us in class, krav gives you tools to use and even when it isn’t “pretty” – and it never is in the real world – those tools can be very effective when it comes to saving your own life, or the lives of those you love.
I’ve started training again, more seriously than before, and I feel more confident about my children receiving the same tools, even though I hope they never have to use them. A lot of parents have told me they think Krav is too violent and they don’t want their kids to learn how to punch or fight. To them, I say the world can be violent and I will continue to have my children learn how to protect themselves, and learn the discipline needed to know when and where to use such knowledge.
I also have heard many women say they are afraid to get hurt in class or they don’t want to get hit. Maybe it might feel a little intimidating the first couple of classes, but it will feel a lot worse to get attacked by a stranger out on the street and have no idea how to defend yourself.
Krav is reality. This system teaches us to react in the most effective way possible. And I am grateful for what I have learned and look forward to learning more.
